Liquid Web was founded in 1997 by Matthew Hill in Holt, MI at the age of 16.
On May 27, 2015, Liquid Web announced that it had accepted a financial investment from Madison Dearborn Partners. As part of the deal, Hill was replaced as CEO by Jim Geiger.

Liquid Web maintains data centers in Michigan, Arizona and Amsterdam. A facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan was opened in 2014 in addition to the headquarters in Lansing, Michigan.
