Brighton Hospital is one of the oldest alcoholism and addiction treatment centers in North America.

Location and construction

It is located on 92 acres (37 ha) in Brighton, Michigan (metro Detroit-Ann Arbor, Livingston County) adjacent to State Parks and Metro Park recreational areas, at Interstate 96 and Kensington Road exit. Brighton's predecessor institution, the Bloomfield Hills Sanitarium, was established in 1943, with the current hospital campus acquired in 1950. The hospital's Ludington Peace Center Chapel was a gift of the Ford Motor Company, having been originally constructed by Henry Ford for Camp Legion, and then moved to the Brighton campus after his death. Brighton added an outpatient campus in 2008 called "Brighton at the Corners" in West Bloomfield Michigan, now closed.

Services

Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, assisted the hospital's founding President, Harry Henderson, in establishing Brighton Hospital as Michigan's first treatment center for alcoholism and addiction. Marty Mann, of the National Council of Alcoholism, was also involved in the early development of the hospital. Since its founding, Brighton has become well known and internationally recognized for its 30-day inpatient treatment programs, including Detoxification (detox), Rehabilitation (drug rehab) and Domiciliary Partial Hospitalization. Brighton accepts patients who pay privately as well as those who have insurance coverage.

Brighton offers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and aftercare programs in alcohol and substance abuse treatment for adults and Intensive Outpatient Program treatment for Adolescents.

Staffing

Brighton Hospital is known as a national leader in the recruitment and training of the greatest number and percentage of addiction-certified nurses (CARN, Certified Addiction Registered Nurses). Brighton Hospital offers Masters-prepared therapists. Several of Brighton's physicians are Fellows of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) the highest level of distinction for addiction doctors. Brighton Hospital also innovated the first interdisciplinary fellowship training program for physicians in North America to educate physicians in the field of addiction medicine in a clinical setting outside a medical school.

Accreditation and affiliations

Brighton Hospital is a member of St. John's Providence Health System, Michigan, a unit of Ascension Health, America's largest faith-based health system. Brighton Hospital serves as the Center of Excellence in Addiction Medicine nationally within Ascension Health. For on-line aftercare support, Brighton is one of the nation's early adopters of OneRecovery and has a dedicated OneRecovery site for its alumni.

Consultation

Internationally, Brighton Hospital is active in consulting to other addiction facilities and private and governmental units in the US, Canada, the Arab Mideast region, and other parts of the world. Brighton partners with the State Bar of Michigan and its Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program for attorneys, judges and law students, who are at especially high risk for addiction, depression, suicide and other disorders. The hospital offers an extensive Health Professionals Recovery Program to serve over two dozen state licensed health professions.

Media

Thanks to a collaboration with Hazelden Publishing, Brighton offers Hazelden books and teaching materials via its campus bookstore. Additionally, Brighton Hospital, through its affiliation with The Betty Ford Center in California, Brighton offers a Free Addiction Prevention Program for Children Ages 7 to 12 who are growing up in a family that has actively using addicts or recovering persons in the household. Children of Alcoholics and Addicts see: National Association of Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) are at four times as much risk of repeating the generation-to-generation pattern of addiction in their families as are their peers.

Other activities

Brighton Hospital's President, Denise Bertin-Epp, has established a unique Service-marked program, Chief Executive Outreach sm, to make herself available to corporate executives and professionals who seek to help individuals, families and business organizations in crisis from addictions. Brighton is also an innovator in Electronic Behavioral Health Record development for addiction and dual-diagnosis care. Its Electronic Behavioral Health Record (EBHR0) has been in use for over three years and has improved the quality, safety and efficacy of care at Brighton Hospital.

The Brighton National Addiction Foundation orchestrates events, grantsmanship, campaigns and other forms of philanthropic support and planned giving in support of programs of treatment, research and education of benefit to addiction patients, family members and children of addicts and alcoholics.
